1) NIX_CFLAGS_COMPILE seems outdated. I needed to edit NIX_CFLAGS_COMPILE_BEFORE_x86-64_unknown_linux_gnu 2) a link to an autotools documentation, or another wiki page, would be greatly appreciated. I really like this one https://devmanual.gentoo.org/general-concepts/autotools/index.html
