The first example doesn't work
$ nix show-derivation 'nixpkgs#hello' error: don't know what to do with argument 'nixpkgs#hello' Try 'nix --help' for more information.

I've fixed this. I believe it should be:
$ nix show-derivation 'nixpkgs.hello'
This works for me whereas using '#' produced the same error L0b0 reported.
